A menswear shop that has been outfitting generations for over a century has received special recognition for its remarkable service to the Cheshire town of Congleton. Davenports Menswear, founded in 1904 by Tom Davenport, has operated for 121 years and is situated in one of the town’s most historic buildings, dating back to the 1430s.
The store, which offers high-quality lifestyle clothing on the ground floor and a wide range of formalwear with alteration services upstairs, has recently been awarded a Town Mayor’s High Street Award. The award was presented to store manager Bob Clarke in recognition of the shop’s enduring contribution to the local community.
Congleton Mayor Kay Wesley praised the shop, saying, “Congratulations to all the team at Davenports for your long service to Congleton. With four sons, I have shopped here many times over the years, and the customer service is excellent.”
She also highlighted the architectural significance of the store’s premises, adding, “The building itself is of immense importance as one of the oldest in Congleton, dating back to the 1430s. The exposed timbers and curious shape of the shop just add to its charm and enhance the shopping experience.”
The Mayor emphasized the value of local businesses like Davenports, encouraging residents to explore what their town centre has to offer. “With these awards, we hope to highlight the great shops and businesses in our town centre and say thank you to them for providing a local service. You don’t have to travel to the nearest city or out-of-town shopping complex to get stylish menswear—it is right here in Congleton. If you haven’t yet, why not check out Davenports?”
As part of the recognition, each awarded business will receive a window sticker and certificate that reflect their years of service. The artwork on these items has been specially designed by Kit Perren, a local artist and business owner. Born in Congleton, Perren has operated a small restoration business in the town for nearly three decades.
Davenports Menswear remains a shining example of how traditional family-run businesses can continue to thrive by combining heritage, quality service, and a commitment to community.
