Hammersmith made fashion history by hosting a groundbreaking show dedicated to clothing designed specifically for disabled bodies.
The recent Future of Fashion event, held at Kindred in Hammersmith, showcased designer Kat Paylor-Bent’s ‘Feel Seen 25’ collection. This collection marked a significant milestone in UK fashion by incorporating braille descriptions created with Swarovski crystals.
“Most fashion is made for people who can walk,” said Kat, who herself uses a wheelchair and is the founder of the inclusive fashion brand Seated Sewing. She emphasized, “Fashion should work for everyone, not the other way around.”
The catwalk featured a diverse range of models with various abilities, including war veterans and wheelchair users, highlighting the potential of adaptive fashion to cater to all.
Hammersmith and Fulham (H&F) Mayor Cllr Patricia Quigley, who also joined the runway, expressed her pride in the event: “Kat’s designs show how reasonable adjustments can be both practical and beautiful. My own Mayoral robe was designed to be inclusive, accessible, and fashionable for my specific body shape, allowing me to feel fabulous while wearing it!”
As both Mayor and a Disabled woman, Cllr Quigley added, “I’m proud that this event was hosted in Hammersmith, and even more thrilled that I got to strut my stuff on the catwalk.”
