African Fashion Week Omaha is making its highly anticipated return to the metro area for its seventh annual celebration—this time with an exciting new theme that looks boldly toward the future.
On Saturday, April 19, the runway at Kaneko will be transformed under the powerful theme of Afrofuturism, which celebrates the future of Black culture, identity, and innovation. This year’s show is not just about style—it’s about vision. Afrofuturism draws on the richness of the past, embraces the realities of the present, and imagines liberated futures for Black communities through fashion, art, and storytelling.
This marks the second time Kaneko will host the fashion event, and the venue is expected to provide a fittingly artistic and immersive space for the creative display. The show will feature eleven dynamic designers, each bringing unique collections that aim to do more than just dazzle onlookers—they intend to inspire empowerment, promote healing, and serve as a tool for self-liberation.
Organizers say this year’s African Fashion Week Omaha goes beyond fabric and flair. It serves as a cultural and artistic platform where messages of strength, identity, and resilience are woven into every garment that graces the runway.
Ahead of the big event, Production Coordinator Adriana Gould and Marketing Strategist Akwaj Maker sat down with KETV’s Waverle Monroe to discuss the inspiration behind this year’s theme and to share details about the weekend’s schedule. The team emphasized how African Fashion Week Omaha continues to grow not only in scale but also in purpose, fostering deeper conversations around heritage, innovation, and the power of fashion as a tool for transformation.
As the countdown continues, excitement builds for what promises to be a vibrant, thought-provoking, and unforgettable night celebrating African excellence and the future of fashion through the lens of Afrofuturism.
