Haim Sisters Revive Skinny Jeans Debate with Stylish BBC Radio Appearance

The Haim sisters—Este, Alana, and Danielle—turned heads this week not just with their music but with their fashion choices, reigniting the debate over one of the most polarizing trends of the 2010s: skinny jeans.

Arriving at BBC Radio 1 on Tuesday, the trio each put their own spin on the slim-fit silhouette, proving its versatility even as critics dismiss it as a passé “recession indicator.” Este, the eldest, paired low-rise black leather pants with patent heels and a lace camisole, while Alana (“Baby Haim”) opted for bohemian patchwork suede skinnies by Dolce & Gabbana. Danielle, the band’s frontwoman, chose industrial denim with silver zips, layered under a cropped military jacket—a nod to 2010s aesthetics.

Once a wardrobe staple from 2007 to 2018, skinny jeans bridged high and low fashion, worn by icons like Kate Moss, Rihanna, and even the sartorially divergent Kim Kardashian and Amy Winehouse. But their 2025 revival has split opinions. On X (formerly Twitter), users joked about the trend’s return signaling economic decline, while a March street-style video by agency Screenshot captured Gen Z’s widespread disdain.

Yet industry insiders saw the comeback coming. WGSN’s denim strategist Susie Draffan told CNN earlier this year that runway appearances—like Miu Miu and Alexander McQueen’s vacuum-packed denim in FW24—hinted at a “slow-burn return.” Unofficial trendsetter Bella Hadid recently sported drainpipe jeans in Rome, and Lila Moss has embraced the style, echoing her mother Kate’s legacy.

The Haim sisters’ fashion moment doubles as a promotional tease for their new album, I Quit, which leans heavily on 2000s nostalgia. Its artwork references paparazzi shots of Nicole Kidman and Kate Moss, while the single Take Me Back features the trio in ultra-low-rise jeans and lace briefs—a deliberate callback to Keira Knightley’s infamous 2004 paparazzi photo.

Shot by Terence O’Connor, their staged paparazzi images blur art and reality, extending the album’s narrative into their wardrobe. As the sisters champion Y2K style both on and offstage, their looks ask a broader question: Can skinny jeans shed their divisive past and reclaim their place in fashion’s future?
