Tom Hardy has become an unexpected ambassador for a lesser-known fashion label, Double RL, as he continues to attract attention for his red carpet appearances. Known for triggering waves of James Bond speculation each time he dons a suit, Hardy has recently shifted from traditional tailoring to a more rugged, Americana-inspired style.
Rather than leaning into the classic Savile Row aesthetic often associated with 007, Hardy has embraced Double RL—a heritage workwear line under Ralph Lauren. This sartorial pivot became evident during recent premieres for his films Havoc and MobLand. At both events, the actor appeared in distinctive three-piece suits crafted by the brand.
At the Havoc premiere, Hardy wore an unstructured khaki canvas jacket paired with a linen-cotton vest, blending a notch and peak lapel for a distinctive silhouette. While it remains unconfirmed whether the rest of the ensemble—shirt, tie, and boots—also hailed from Double RL, the cohesive aesthetic suggested a complete look from the label.
A few weeks later, at the London premiere of MobLand, Hardy opted for a pinstripe indigo three-piece suit accented by a 1930s-style chain fob. One detail, however, stood apart from the Ralph Lauren design: a red anemone boutonniere, which was pinned to his lapel by Esquire UK’s deputy editor Miranda Collinge during a cover shoot earlier the same day.
Double RL, often flying under the radar despite its high-profile parent company, was launched in 1993. The brand draws inspiration from early 20th-century American workwear, military uniforms, and Western styles. With references to miners, cowboys, and traditional laborers, Double RL places a strong emphasis on high-quality selvedge denim sourced from prestigious American and Japanese mills.
The name “Double RL” itself is a nod to Ralph Lauren’s working cattle ranch in Colorado, shared with his wife Ricky. While Hardy’s chosen suits represent some of the brand’s more refined offerings, the broader collection includes vintage-style items such as flight coveralls inspired by the Wright brothers, industrial shop coats, and pinstripe linen dungarees.
Alongside these niche pieces, the brand also features more accessible options, including patterned shawl cardigans, canvas jackets, western shirts, jeans, belts, and a variety of tees and sweatshirts. This blend of historic inspiration and contemporary wearability makes Double RL a unique presence in the fashion world—one that has now earned a high-profile endorsement from one of Britain’s most watched actors.
