Miimi & Jiinda, one of Australia’s most acclaimed Indigenous-led sustainable fashion and art labels, made a powerful return to AFC Australian Fashion Week 2025, unveiling their latest collection titled ‘Bambuuda Garlaawirr’ (Morning Light) on the prestigious New Generation runway.
Known for their striking, storytelling-driven creations, Miimi & Jiinda captivated fashion media, critics, and press with a showcase deeply rooted in culture, artistic expression, and sustainability. The new collection drew inspiration from creation stories and the dawn light over Country, capturing these elements in both design and spirit.
Label founder Melissa Greenwood, a proud Gumbaynggirr woman, infused the runway pieces with flowing silhouettes, hand-painted artworks, and woven detailing. The garments, crafted from luxurious silks, soft linens, and natural fibres, visually narrated the moment of creation—when light first touched the mountains, seas, rivers, and waterways.
“It really is about celebrating that sacred moment in our creation stories,” Greenwood shared. “I wanted to translate that light and spiritual essence into each piece. From hand-painted garments to printed textiles, everything reflects our culture and connection to Country.”
Greenwood’s creative vision is deeply influenced by her mother, Lauren Jarrett, a master weaver whose intricate handwoven adornments added rich textures and cultural depth to the collection. The collaboration between mother and daughter is central to the brand’s identity, reflecting a lineage of strong matriarchs and the passing of ancestral knowledge through art and fashion.
“I come from a really strong line of matriarchs—my mum, nan, and gran,” Greenwood said in an interview with Style Up. “To be here, showcasing our work and celebrating our heritage, is incredibly meaningful. Indigenous designers are now being seen and heard, and I’m here to keep telling our stories with pride.”
Among the standout garments was a hand-painted Indigenous wedding dress, a showpiece that encapsulated the essence of the collection—artistry, identity, and respect for cultural narratives. The brand’s commitment to ethical, small-batch production remains evident, with sustainability at the heart of every design decision.
What began as an art practice has since evolved into a full-fledged fashion label that upholds values of cultural storytelling, sustainability, and matriarchal strength. The 2025 Australian Fashion Week presentation confirmed Miimi & Jiinda’s place as a trailblazer in contemporary Indigenous fashion, inspiring future generations and expanding global appreciation for Indigenous artistry.
