Bold Vision, Fresh Voices: Braam Fashion Week Showcases Joburg’s Youthful Style Scene

by Demos

Braamfontein, Johannesburg — often described as a city within a city — is a vibrant enclave that pulses with the energy of students from some of South Africa’s leading academic institutions. Given its youthful spirit, it’s only fitting that the area plays host to a fashion showcase centered on emerging talent: Braam Fashion Week.

According to co-founder Phetogo Pule, Braam Fashion Week was established to serve as a launching pad for young creatives in the fashion industry. “Braam Fashion Week exists to give young designers, models, and makeup artists a platform to showcase their skills and creativity,” Pule told The Citizen. The event was co-founded with Thato Mokgawa, and it has quickly become a key fixture on the city’s style calendar.

Now in its fifth edition, this biannual event returns at the end of May, once again taking place at The Playground in the heart of Braamfontein. “We believe in creating opportunities where there often aren’t enough and providing a space where fresh voices can be heard,” Pule added.

The Winter/Fall edition will highlight the talents of fashion students from institutions such as Villioti Fashion Institute, who will unveil their latest designs on the runway. Additionally, aspiring makeup artists from Face-to-Face West Rand / Roodepoort Beauty School will contribute their artistry behind the scenes, showcasing the technical skill and passion needed to thrive in the beauty industry.

This year’s theme, I am fashion, was chosen to reflect the event’s core values: individuality, authenticity, and artistry. According to the founders, the theme encapsulates the spirit of Braam Fashion Week — a celebration of self-expression in all its forms.

“The Braam Fashion Week show is open to all Joburgers and celebrates the city’s unique fashion culture,” said Mokgawa. “The event showcases authentic street style, offering everyone a chance to enjoy and appreciate the creativity and talent that make Johannesburg’s fashion scene so special.”

Since its debut in 2023, Braam Fashion Week has continued to grow in popularity. The inaugural event welcomed more than 600 attendees, while last year’s installment attracted just over 400 fashion enthusiasts. The organisers are optimistic that this year’s show will match or surpass that energy.

“These numbers show that this event truly resonates with the people; it’s a platform they connect with, a celebration they see themselves in. This year, we are hoping to keep the same energy,” Mokgawa said.

Attendees can expect a dazzling display of cutting-edge fashion, bold designs, and fresh talent. But Braam Fashion Week is more than just a fashion show — it’s a cultural movement that blends fashion, music, and the arts. As in previous years, the event will also feature live performances by rising stars in the local music scene, adding an extra layer of excitement and entertainment.

“This is a space where creativity flourishes,” Mokgawa said. “It’s a movement, a show that will leave everyone inspired.”
