Buluuy Mirrii Shines Bright at Australian Fashion Week with ‘Women’s Business’ Collection

Since making waves at New York Fashion Week in 2023, Colleen Tighe Johnson—founder of the fashion brand Buluuy Mirrii, meaning “Black Star” in the Gamilaraay language—has continued to gain momentum as a celebrated First Nations designer.

This week, Johnson proudly debuted her latest collection, titled Women’s Business, on the runway at Australian Fashion Week. The milestone marked a significant moment in her journey, particularly as a proud Gomeroi yinarr from Moree, New South Wales. Her appearance at this prominent fashion event resonated not just personally, but also with her community back home.

Before stepping onto the runway, Johnson spoke with Style Up about her latest accomplishments. “Showing at Australian Fashion Week in Sydney is a runway I haven’t showcased before, so this will be my first. I think this one will be emotional, but I’m very proud to be showcasing in my home state of NSW,” she said. “This will ensure that Buluuy Mirrii makes a strong and positive impact on my future career.”

She expressed her excitement at representing First Nations designers at one of the largest events on the Australian fashion calendar. “It’s a great project to begin with, especially at such a high-profile event like AFW. It’s an incredible opportunity to promote the brand and share our stories.”

The Women’s Business collection pays tribute to Johnson’s culture, incorporating design elements and color schemes rooted in her community. “This has been a satisfying project to compile—a unique collection with a meaningful color palette,” she said. “Culture is a significant part of Buluuy Mirrii’s designs. Through my label, I’m reviving cultural narratives and telling the stories of the world’s oldest living culture using high-grade textiles, harnessing the spirit of my ancestors.”

At its core, Women’s Business celebrates matriarchal strength and the vision of future generations. The collection’s blue-toned palette is inspired by the Artesian Healing Waters of Moree, adding another layer of symbolism and connection to place.

Model Jahna Lugnan, an ambassador for Buluuy Mirrii, was among those who graced the runway. “I had a lot of fun on the runway. Colleen is amazing, and I love walking for her. It was a great opportunity,” Lugnan shared.

Reflecting on the evolution of her brand, Johnson acknowledged the role international exposure has played in elevating Buluuy Mirrii’s presence in both global and Australian markets. “The international exposure has had a profound impact, helping shape a clearer vision for the brand’s future,” she explained. “Over time, Buluuy Mirrii has refined its quality and expanded to engage the next generation while staying relevant in a sustainable fashion landscape.”

Sustainability is a key pillar of the brand. Johnson is committed to producing fashion that not only tells cultural stories but also protects the environment. “As a First Nations designer, my aim is to maintain growth with minimal environmental impact,” she said. “It’s important to use sustainable fabrics that are eco-friendly and recyclable, helping to reduce landfill. Through my label, I want to leave a positive legacy—making people feel confident and connected to culture, both inside and out.”

Looking ahead, Johnson has her sights set on even greater accomplishments. Having already featured at global events such as New York Fashion Week, the Cannes Film Festival Showroom, and Canada’s Fashion Speaks International, she is preparing for Buluuy Mirrii’s next chapter: Milan Fashion Week 2025.

“I see Buluuy Mirrii progressing and evolving into a sustainable and commercially viable business over the next few years,” she said.

As Johnson continues to carve out a space for Indigenous storytelling within the global fashion landscape, Buluuy Mirrii remains a beacon of cultural pride, innovation, and environmental consciousness.
