Kentucky Derby Supports Influencer After Backlash Over Bold Outfit Choice

by Demos

The Kentucky Derby has received praise for its handling of a controversy surrounding an influencer’s outfit deemed “inappropriate” by some attendees and social media users.

Gabriela Moura, a popular influencer with nearly three million Instagram followers, sparked online debate after appearing at the Kentucky Oaks race on Friday evening in a revealing yellow dress. The outfit, which some said showed too much skin, quickly went viral.

Many online comments criticized her look, calling it unsuitable for the high-profile event.

“This is not appropriate for the Derby,” one commenter wrote.

“Don’t they have a dress code??” another questioned.

The viral reaction prompted Moura to respond directly through a video posted to her social media accounts, where she addressed the backlash and defended her choice of attire.

“I’m getting ready for Kentucky Derby day two, and I saw a couple of comments on my last video,” Moura said. “I don’t know if you’re going to misunderstand what I’m saying in this video, but big boob girls are going to understand what I’m saying.”

She continued candidly:

“Girls with big boobs, there’s no way to hide it, like honestly. There are so many dresses that I love, but if I wear them people are going to say, ‘Wow, she’s vulgar.’ But I just can’t do anything about the boobs, and I don’t want people to take this the wrong way and say ‘Why is she complaining?’ I’m not.”

Despite the criticism from some quarters, the Kentucky Derby stood by Moura’s participation and outfit choice. She returned to the Derby on Saturday wearing a slightly more conservative ensemble, continuing to participate in the festivities without issue.

Importantly, the Derby clarified its stance on fashion and dress code expectations. While the event is renowned for its fashion-forward atmosphere, there are no strict dress requirements in place.

“The Kentucky Derby is an event unlike any other and that extends from The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports all the way to the unmatched style,” the organization shared. “Louisville may not be known as a fashion capital, but the city has a unique style all its own. From Derby hats to bourbon-inspired clothing lines, fashion in Louisville is a blend of Southern charm and urban edge.”

The Derby’s official fashion guidelines emphasize personal expression:
“Derby week is a chance to show up and show out. For some that might mean bold, bright, floral looks, and for others, it’s a chance to showcase a refined elegance. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to Derby dressing. The same rule goes for everyone: dress to impress.”

Though Moura’s outfit drew criticism, the Kentucky Derby’s response made it clear that guests are encouraged to celebrate personal style, whatever form that may take. By standing behind Moura’s right to dress in a way that made her feel confident, the event sent a message of inclusivity and fashion freedom.
