Kurdish Man Detained for Wearing Traditional Clothing at Son’s Wedding

by Demos

Ebrahim Mardani, a 47-year-old Kurdish man from Bukan, has been arrested by agents of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Intelligence Department and transferred to an unknown location, according to reports from the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.

The arrest took place on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Mardani’s family home. Sources close to the family stated that the arrest was linked to the presence of guests at his son’s wedding who wore traditional Kurdish attire, including “Jamaneh” and khaki-colored garments. These forms of traditional dress have increasingly drawn the attention of authorities, who appear to view them as politically symbolic.

As of now, there is no confirmed information about Mardani’s current location or legal status.

This arrest follows a pattern of similar incidents, such as the case on March 4, 2025, when Mahmoud Naderi was detained in Sanandaj under the same justification. Furthermore, in early January 2024, judicial authorities summoned at least 58 Kurdish men in Mahabad, Bukan, and Piranshahr, many of whom were relatives of individuals killed during the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Woman, Life, Freedom) movement. They were accused of engaging in “symbolism” for attending weddings dressed in traditional Jamaneh and khaki garments.

Despite heightened surveillance and legal crackdowns, recent months have witnessed a rise in public defiance. Videos have surfaced online showing wedding attendees in cities such as Sanandaj, Bukan, Mahabad, Piranshahr, and Oshnavieh (Shino) wearing Jamaneh and khaki clothing, as a visible act of solidarity with those previously arrested or harassed for similar reasons.
