Rebecca Black Steals the AMAs Spotlight in a Playful “Shotgun Wedding” Ensemble

The 2024 American Music Awards (AMAs) made a glittering return to the stage after a two-year hiatus, relocating to Las Vegas for the first time—a move that inspired a mix of Sin City glitz and offbeat red-carpet moments. But no one leaned into the city’s over-the-top spirit quite like Rebecca Black, who arrived dressed for a shotgun wedding in a corseted ivory taffeta gown, veiled headpiece, and a monogrammed sailor hat.

The look, designed by Erik Charlotte for his Fall 2024 maritime-inspired capsule collection, blended bridal tradition with irreverent flair. When Variety asked if she’d intentionally chosen a wedding dress, Black quipped, “I did not, but then we ended up here, and I said, ‘Of course I’m getting married.’” She later told Billboard her goal was to resemble “an angel” and “float down the carpet.”

From Viral Teen Star to Cult Queer Icon

Black, now 27, rose to fame in 2011 as the teen behind the polarizing pop anthem “Friday,” which catapulted her into the spotlight—and relentless online ridicule. In recent years, she’s reinvented herself as a hyperpop artist and sought-after DJ, playing Boiler Room sets and opening for Katy Perry. Her music and style now embrace campy, queer-coded aesthetics, earning her a devoted new fanbase.

“I’m taking it one day at a time. I have a lot of fun with what I do—obviously,” she told Billboard on the AMAs carpet, gesturing to her ensemble.

A Subdued Red Carpet with Standout Moments

Black’s whimsical look stood out on an otherwise low-key red carpet, where many nominees skipped the event entirely. The night honored legends like Janet Jackson and Gloria Estefan, but several winners submitted pre-recorded acceptance speeches.

Among attendees, Vegas-inspired fashion ranged from disjointed to dazzling: Jennifer Lopez, as host, cycled through multiple sequined gowns; Benson Boone performed in a bold purple floral suit by Dolce & Gabbana; and Ciara channeled a showgirl in a chain-draped Bronx and Banco bodysuit, joking to Billboard, “We gotta bring bling bling to Vegas.”

Bridal Fashion’s Runway Revival

While Black may not be heading to a chapel anytime soon, her look nods to a broader trend: bridalwear as statement fashion. As the AMAs’ official afterparty DJ, she closed the night with the same cheeky energy that defined her outfit—proving once again that reinvention is her forte.
