Empowering Futures: Local Women Unite Through Clothing Donations

by Demos

Although Mother’s Day officially took place on Sunday, its spirit of generosity continued as a significant donation effort unfolded in Sioux Falls. A truck brimming with donated clothing arrived outside Embe, a local nonprofit organization, as part of the annual Movers for Moms event organized by Two Men and a Truck. This initiative aims to support women, especially mothers, by providing them with professional attire for career advancement.

Angela Drake, the Sioux Falls owner of Two Men and a Truck, shared the community’s enthusiasm, noting that people had been arriving at their office throughout the weekend with more items to donate. Volunteers also came to help sort the donations, leading to even more items scheduled for delivery after the initial drop-off. The items collected during the event included a range of professional garments, now destined to make a lasting impact through Embe’s Dress for Success program.

At Embe, the Dress for Success initiative offers tailored support for women entering or re-entering the workforce. Program participants receive assistance in preparing for interviews, starting with a personalized styling session. Each woman is given a complete interview outfit, which typically includes a pair of dress pants, shoes, jewelry, and a top. Once they secure employment, they are invited to return and receive up to a week’s worth of work-appropriate clothing.

The abundance of donations surpassed Embe’s immediate needs, prompting organizers to extend the initiative’s impact to other local nonprofits. Drake explained that some items collected weren’t a perfect fit for Embe’s Dress for Success, so the organization tapped into their own resources to reach out to other groups such as Call to Freedom and Saint Francis House, ensuring that nothing went to waste and that more women could benefit from the community’s generosity.

The essence of this effort lies in the spirit of women uplifting each other. Over the past few weeks, women from around the community contributed clothing not just for today’s needs but for the future success of other women. Drake emphasized the symbolic and practical importance of the donations, saying that they offer more than just clothing—they provide a firm foundation for women to confidently enter new careers.

Webb echoed this sentiment, underlining the broader social value of collective support. She stressed that when the community unites with a shared goal, it fosters positivity, strength, and empowerment. Coming together in this way allows individuals to not only support one another but also to build a thriving and confident community.

Last year’s Movers for Moms drive collected an impressive 174,000 articles of clothing. This year, the generosity of the Sioux Falls community went even further, with donations approaching 200,000 items. The milestone reflects a growing commitment to ensuring that women have the resources and encouragement they need to pursue successful, independent futures.
