The fashion world is mourning the loss of David Moss, a distinguished figure in British menswear, who played a significant role in the development of the Moss Bros retail empire. Moss was a descendant of the company’s founder, Moses Moss, who established the iconic brand in 1851.
David Moss held the position of buying director at Moss Bros before departing the company in 2001. At the time of his departure, he was the last remaining family member in a senior leadership role within the business. Since 2020, Moss Bros has been under the ownership of Brigadier Acquisition Company, the same firm that owns Crew Clothing.
In his later years, David Moss ran the independent menswear store Richard Gelding, located on North Audley Street in London’s prestigious Mayfair district. He sold the store to its general manager, Mike Hughes, in 2024.
Rowland Gee, former CEO of Moss Bros, reflected warmly on his time with Moss, stating: “I first got to know David in 1989 when Cecil Gee was acquired by Moss Bros. His relationship with suppliers was top notch, his humour and love of our brands was a joy to work with. His team supported him as he encouraged opinion and listened. We stayed in touch in recent years and he never stopped caring about his heritage. I wish his family and friends only the very best memories.”
Simon Berwin, a former supplier to Moss Bros and a fellow menswear veteran, also paid tribute: “A friend and a gentleman. Cared passionately about the business. Gone too soon.”
James Barden, CEO of menswear supplier Rextrek, added his condolences: “[David] always made time for others and I was lucky to have known him. Very sad, a genuine gentleman of our industry.”
David Moss is survived by his wife Fiona and their four children: Harry, Katie, Laura, and Max.
